Branched-chain amino acids [BCAA] are among the nine essential amino acids for humans. Among the proteinogenic amino acids [precursors to proteins], there are three BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine and valine. Their supplementation has been reported to decrease exercise-induced protein degradation and possibly promote an anti-catabolic hormonal profile. One study reported that 30 days of BCAA supplementation [14 grams/day] promoted a significant increase in muscle mass in untrained subjects
